LATIE, the Licensing Authority for Teaching of International English, was founded in 1999, as an evolution of the United Nations conference on Intercultural and Multicultural Education in Montreal, Canada and in recognition of the growing importance of the English Language in international education, communication, business, and diplomacy.
Conference participants foresaw the need for an independent body to serve as a global English language directorate and Standards authority serving the needs of English Education worldwide.
The initial LATIE mandate was to encompass all sectors of English education worldwide including English teachers, schools, and students worldwide.
LATIE was empowered to promote excellence in English education by assessing school programs, both English Teacher Training and English as a Second Language as well as the teaching credentials and experience of English teachers.
The initial LATIE mandate was endorsed by LATIE attending participants at the 2000 World Education Forum in Dakar,Senegal, entitled The Dakar Framework for Action: Education for All.
In 2002 LATIE was expanded to assist and accredit English schools worldwide in evaluating its ESL students on an international level of achievement and award the students with the LATIE CERTIFICATE of ACHIEVEMENT IN ENGLISH.
In 2003 LATIES´mandate was again expanded to provide a source of information on the ethical business operations of schools worldwide, allowing teachers and clients to obtain and provide information on the operating practices of both member and non-member schools worldwide.
LATIE, through its various programs, aims to promote a higher standard of ethical and academic practices in English schools and institutes worldwide and among teachers of International English.
